WINEMAKER NOTES
In the heart of Bordeaux's Left Bank, Château de Pez stands as a testament to centuries of winemaking mastery. Established in the 15th century, it proudly holds the title of the oldest domaine in Saint-Estèphe, boasting 104 acres of continuous vineyards, with 94 acres dedicated to the cultivation of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Embarking on an intellectual and technical odyssey since 2005, Château de Pez, under the stewardship of winemaker Nicolas Glumineau, has embraced precision winemaking. The journey includes a foray into biodynamic viticulture, a state-of-the-art cellar allowing plot-by-plot vinification, and a meticulous selection of French oak barrels.
Winemaking at Château de Pez is a dance with tradition and innovation. The blend, meticulously composed in December, finds its home in barrels—35-40% new wood depending on the vintage, with a balance between "Premier vin" and "Deuxième vin" casks. Notably, the wine undergoes no filtration, allowing its true character to shine through.
The symphony of flavors in the Château de Pez 2019 is a sensory journey. Aromas of liquorice and golden tobacco greet the nose, unfolding to reveal fruity (redcurrant, blackberry) and floral (iris) notes. The palate, smooth and syrupy, evokes the essence of raspberry jelly. A well-balanced experience culminates in a savory finish, where slightly grainy tannins provide energy and length, precision, and sweetness.
Harvested in the unique conditions of 2019—a year marked by abundant sunshine and a touch of drought—the Château de Pez 2019 reflects a vibrant and mineral tension, showcasing a delicate balance between power and elegance. The meticulous vineyard management throughout the seasons, from the early bud break to the careful harvest in October, resulted in a wine that captures the soul of its terroir.
In the glass, you'll discover a harmonious blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. The wine's alcohol content stands at 14.33%, with a pH of 3.69. The unique soil composition of gravel with clay and limestone, coupled with an average vine age of 25 years, contributes to the wine's distinct character. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels, including 35% new oak, the Château de Pez 2019 is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship that defines this historic estate.
