TASTING NOTES
In 1982, the Groth family expanded their winemaking legacy with the acquisition of Hillview Vineyard, nestled near their esteemed Oakville Estate. Originally intended for Merlot blending, they uncovered its hidden potential for crafting exceptional Chardonnay. Today, two generations of Groths call this vineyard home, where sustainable practices thrive alongside vines laden with promise.
The harvest of 2022 unfolded in two acts, commencing with Sauvignon Blanc in late August, followed swiftly by the Estate Chardonnay in early September. A capricious weather dance, with a sudden surge of heat, challenged the vineyard and cellar teams. Yet, the resilience of the grapes prevailed, yielding wines of unparalleled beauty amidst the chaos of nature.
Crafted from the finest Chardonnay grapes nurtured on the Groth family's Hillview Vineyard, this wine embodies the essence of its terroir. Embracing the cool breezes from San Pablo Bay and the vineyard's unique soil composition, it strikes a harmonious balance between luscious fruit, vibrant acidity, and a distinctive mineral character.
The winemaking process is a symphony of precision and artistry, with whole-cluster pressing extracting delicate flavors, while a portion undergoes destemming to enrich its structure and aromatic complexity. Fermented and aged in French oak barrels for eight months, the wine matures gracefully, revealing layers of crème brûlée, green apple, and apricot, intertwined with hints of orange blossom and baking spice.
