WINEMAKER NOTES
Indulge in the remarkable elegance and alchemical finesse of Hanna's 2020 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted with utmost care and cultivated on our esteemed Red Ranch in the heart of Alexander Valley, this exceptional wine is a testament to the mastery of our winemaking artistry. Prepare to be captivated by its enchanting aromas, seductive flavors, and flawless balance.

Nestled below Hoot Owl Creek, our benchland ranch boasts a terroir adorned with Clough Series gravelly loam soil, while above Hoot Owl, the vines luxuriate in the embrace of Laughlin Series Sandy Loam. These two distinctive soil profiles, both less than two feet deep, contribute to the nuanced character and complexity found within each sip of this extraordinary Cabernet.

Immerse yourself in the world of Hanna's vineyards, where 50 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by 10 acres of Malbec, two acres of Petit Verdot, and a precious half acre of Saint Macaire, gracefully thrive. Within our meticulously tended vines, a harmonious blend of clones emerges—the Cabernet Sauvignon clones 7, 2, and 6, the Malbec clone 9, the Merlot clone 3, the Petit Verdot clone 400, and the Saint Macaire representing a field selection. The culmination of these varietals and clones brings forth a symphony of flavors and textures, taking you on an unforgettable journey.

Reflecting upon the weather conditions of 2019, we recall a mild and wet winter, gifting the vines with over 50 inches of rain. This abundance of moisture delayed the bud break and set the stage for a year marked by minimal irrigation. As the growing season progressed, degree-days surpassed those of the previous year, with ideal weather prevailing, punctuated only by a few warm days in mid-August and late September. This delicate balance allowed us to fully harness the fruit's potential, erasing any concerns brought on by a touch of mid-September rain. Harvest, which spanned from October 8 to November 4, 2019, showcased the finesse of our winemaking team as they carefully hand-picked the grapes during the tranquil midnight to sunrise hours.

The journey from vineyard to glass was one guided by a relentless pursuit of excellence. Following the sorting process, the grapes were destemmed and partially crushed, finding their way into stainless steel fermentation tanks. The magic unfolded as we continually monitored the wines through daily tastings during and after pumpovers. With an artist's touch, the final blend was artfully crafted in June of 2020, and the wine matured gracefully in a marriage of French and Hungarian oak barrels for a total of 18 months. Of these barrels, 35% were new, contributing just the right amount of structure and complexity to the final creation.

As you immerse yourself in the glass, a rush of pleasure-eliciting aromas vie for attention. The vivacious bouquet unfolds with intoxicating notes of violet, Santa Rosa plum, thyme, cranberry, black cherry, and Madagascar vanilla—all enticing you to take a moment and savor the symphony of scents. On the palate, Hanna's 2020 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the alchemical prowess of the Cabernet grape, deftly transforming the radiant sun and Franciscan soil of the region into a harmonious chorus of flavors. Immerse your senses in the decadence of chocolate custard, anko bean paste, blackberry leather, warm basalt, and sugar-spiced almonds. This masterful composition leaves no room for discord from oak, tannins, or alcohol, culminating in an expression of elegance that borders on perfection.

93 POINTS - "Black pepper and black olive nuances blend with black cherries and dark choc- olate in this medium- to full-bodied wine that includes 24% Malbec. An elegant feel, silky texture and nicely restrained flavors give the wine a charm all its own. Best through 2030." - Wine Enthusiast
A rush of pleasure-eliciting aromas jostle exuberantly in the glass. Violet, Santa Rosa plum, thyme, cranberry, black cherry and Madagascar vanilla are all there for the taking. Its flavors are a tour de force of Cabernet’s alchemical prowess, transmuting Alexander Valley’s sun and Franciscan soil into chocolate custard, anko bean paste, blackberry leather, warm basalt, and sugar spiced almonds. All this without a note of discord from oak, tannin, or alcohol. Elegant but not haughty, and nigh on perfect.
