WINEMAKER NOTES
Overture 2021, crafted by the legendary Opus One, represents a remarkable achievement, highlighting both the estate’s diversity and the distinctiveness of its growing season. The 2021 vintage marks a significant milestone as the first vintage-dated release of Overture, embodying the winery's commitment to showcasing the character of each season. Meticulously blended under the guidance of winemaker Michael Silacci, this exceptional wine is a harmonious symphony of fruit, earth, and elegance.

Harvested from select blocks in Opus One's esteemed vineyards, Overture 2021 benefits from the estate’s unique location in Oakville. The alluvial soils of the western Mayacamas foothills bring a complexity to the fruit that defines this wine. The team’s detailed understanding of the various vineyard parcels, combined with thoughtful farming practices, allows for a precise expression of the terroir. This careful attention extends into the winemaking process, ensuring the same level of craftsmanship that defines Opus One’s flagship wine. As a result, Overture 2021 reveals itself as a softer, more approachable counterpart, while still offering a profound depth of flavor.

On the nose, Overture 2021 opens with a burst of ripe plum, blackberry, and black cherry, interwoven with fragrant notes of dried rose petals, fresh herbs, and subtle earthiness. There’s a compelling minerality that reflects the unique soils of the vineyard blocks, adding to the wine's sense of place. On the palate, this vintage is delightfully juicy and bright, presenting vibrant flavors of black currant, blueberry, and wild strawberries. The fruit is beautifully balanced by powdery tannins and a velvety mouthfeel, delivering the signature suppleness that Overture is known for.

As the wine evolves in the glass, intriguing layers of dark chocolate, espresso, and a hint of forest floor emerge, adding complexity to the long, lingering finish. The acidity is perfectly integrated, providing freshness and lift, while the tannins offer a gentle structure that makes the wine immensely drinkable now, yet capable of further aging.

With Overture 2021, Opus One offers a wine that not only reflects the skill and precision of its winemaking team but also emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices in Napa Valley. Certified as part of the Napa Green Initiative, Opus One continues to lead by example, with a commitment to preserving the environment while producing wines of remarkable quality.

93 POINTS - "The first time specific blocks have been used for this wine. Dark forest berry notes on the nose with perfumed elements and notes of milk chocolate. Supple and agile, generous with textured, slightly grainy tannins that are so pleasant - expansive and round in the mouth. It's well built and very approachable with blackcurrant and black cherry flavours on the palate. Concentrated, deep and layered but still with elegance. Extremely characterful. A blend of the 2018 and 2019 vintages with 18 months ageing in French oak barrels. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. DRINK 2023-2031." - Decanter

93 POINTS - "Vivid cherry red, medium intensity, pared back and moreish. Enticing charred plum and spiced black cherry, restrained and savoury, chalky tannins, good lift through the palate without losing the creaminess of the fruit, a dusting of cocoa powder adds a gourmet twist. 65% new oak for ageing. 2021 was a very dry vintage (2nd driest in history of Opus) but there were few extremes of temperature, and this is a delicious Overture. First one with a vintage on the label, after a few years of slowly moving that way. Impressive, easy to recommend. " - Janes Anson
