WINEMAKER NOTES
The 2019 Protégé Chardonnay is a masterclass in restraint, precision, and the art of crafting world-class Napa Valley Chardonnay. Guided by the legendary winemaker Mike Chelini and his protégé, Matt Torres—a fourth-generation member of the Trinchero family—this wine is a testament to the seamless passing of knowledge and the pursuit of excellence. Together, they have created a Chardonnay that captures the essence of Napa Valley while showcasing the cool-climate elegance that defines their winemaking philosophy.

Sourced exclusively from the certified sustainable Vista Montone Vineyard, this wine is a reflection of its unique terroir. Planted in 2004 in the southernmost reaches of Napa Valley, the vineyard benefits from cool maritime influences that travel up from the San Pablo Bay, ensuring a slow, even ripening process. The grapes are drawn from three distinct blocks with a northern orientation, which limits sun exposure and preserves natural acidity. Deep, well-draining clay loam soils and Clone 5 vines contribute to the wine’s vibrant structure and high-quality fruit. The 2019 growing season was nothing short of ideal, with ample winter rainfall, moderate temperatures, and plenty of sunshine, resulting in fruit of exceptional quality.

Handpicked at night on September 27th, 2019, the grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented with two carefully selected yeasts: 50% Melody for fresh, fruity accents and 50% Montrachet (Premier Classique) for added depth and complexity. Aged for nine months in mostly neutral French oak barrels (12% new), the wine underwent no malolactic fermentation—a signature Chelini technique—preserving its natural brightness and racy acidity. A meticulous lees-stirring regimen ensured a silky texture and seamless integration, resulting in a wine that balances delicate power with finesse.

On the nose, the 2019 Protégé Chardonnay opens with a vibrant bouquet of dried flowers, lemon zest, stone fruits, and white peach, complemented by an attractive steely note. The palate is elegant and refined, with a light, silky texture and flavors of citrus and mineral-driven nuances. The finish is long and refreshing, with balanced acidity and a fuller body that lingers beautifully. This is a Chardonnay that not only delights in its youth but also promises to evolve gracefully in the cellar. For those who appreciate wines of structure, balance, and understated brilliance, the 2019 Protégé Chardonnay is a must-have addition to your collection.
